Chobits — Tome 3

With this third volume, Chobits shifts its pace ever so slightly: without ever straying far from Hideki and Chi for long, the story allows itself longer detours through its secondary characters, whose personal stories enrich the series' central reflection on the nature of love between humans and Persocoms. Minoru Kokubunji takes center stage: we learn that he himself designed and built his own Persocom, Yuzuki, to whom he is so totally attached that he ends up avoiding every other relationship, human or otherwise. His story, handled with great delicacy, directly questions the limits of emotional dependence on a machine programmed never to disappoint or contradict its owner — a distorted but revealing mirror of the relationship Hideki is building with Chi. This volume also multiplies the scenes where Chi shows reactions increasingly hard to explain by mere mechanics: an unexpected emotion, an intuition that seems to stem from common sense rather than calculation, or, conversely, moments where she freezes, as if overwhelmed by something she doesn't understand herself. These carefully doled-out sequences sustain a growing atmosphere of mystery without ever settling for a premature explanation. Meanwhile, the relationship between Hideki and Chi keeps tightening: the things left unsaid gradually give way to a more openly acknowledged closeness, even if the nature of their bond — friendship, something like filial affection, budding love — remains deliberately blurry, mirroring the uncertainty that lives within the two characters themselves. CLAMP also sprinkles in some welcome touches of humor, reminding us that despite the growing gravity of its subtext, Chobits remains above all a bittersweet chronicle of student life, where the small joys of daily existence matter just as much as the great existential questions looming on the horizon.
