Chobits — Tome 7
In this seventh volume, the previous volume's revelation runs through every page: Hideki and Chi must now come to terms with a truth that entirely redefines their relationship. Far from easing tensions, the confirmation that Chi belongs to the legend of the "Chobits" opens up new questions, more intimate and more agonizing: what does it truly mean to love such a creature? What limits, what dangers, what responsibilities does that place on Hideki? The story sets up a bittersweet urgency, where every shared moment of happiness seems tinged with the awareness that it might not last. The secondary characters, whose narrative arcs are also nearing resolution, offer a valuable counterpoint: Minoru and Yuzuki, Shinbo and his finally soothed past, let the reader compare different ways of approaching the question of loving a Persocom, some fulfilling, others more tragic, without CLAMP ever favoring a single answer. Chitose Hibiya continues to play the role of a kind but clear-eyed guide, reminding us that the legend of the Chobits, however beautiful, has always come with a price to pay. Chi herself gradually changes in demeanor: more aware of her own nature, she seems both to grow inwardly and to draw closer to a choice she will sooner or later have to make. This volume, dense with restrained emotion, carefully prepares the ground for the resolution, avoiding any easy shortcut: every scene counts, every line of dialogue carries its weight of things unsaid, in a masterfully controlled crescendo that makes this one of the most intense volumes of the entire series.
