A young man from rural Japan, Hideki Motosuwa arrives in Tokyo to prepare, with more than uncertain odds of success, for the university entrance exam. Broke and forced to juggle odd jobs to pay for his studies and his rent, he embodies an endearing, unpretentious figure, often clumsy but always sincere in his intentions. His life changes the evening he discovers Chi abandoned in the street: rather than ignore her, he chooses to bring her home despite his already threadbare budget, a spontaneous act of compassion that speaks volumes about his fundamentally generous nature. Unlike other characters in the series, Hideki has never sought to own a Persocom for prestige or for what use she might bring him; his attachment to Chi is born and grows organically, as he helps her learn about the world and as she, in turn, brightens an otherwise lonely daily life. His relationship with Chi pushes him to question things he had never had to confront before: what is love, can it exist between a human and a machine, and how far does his own responsibility extend toward a being as vulnerable as her? Hideki is not a hero in the classic sense — he remains, to the very end, an ordinary student, financially precarious and socially awkward — but it is precisely this unassuming ordinariness that makes his emotional journey alongside Chi so universally moving, and that makes him one of the most endearing protagonists in CLAMP's catalog.
