The Final Choice

The final volume gently ties together every narrative thread opened since the beginning of the series. Chi, now fully aware of her nature and of the weight of the Chobits legend, finds herself facing a decision that concerns not only her own future but Hideki's as well: whether to keep living together in full knowledge of what she truly is, whatever that may entail. CLAMP chooses to treat this resolution not as a spectacular twist, but as the logical outcome of a question asked since the very first page — what makes someone love another person, and must that person necessarily be human for that love to count? The secondary characters (Minoru and Yuzuki, Shinbo, Yumi) also close their own arcs, each having, in their own way, found a form of peace with the place Persocoms occupy in their lives. Far from a simple technological fairy tale, this finale embraces the melancholy inherent to its founding premise: the promise of sincere love never entirely erases the difference in nature between a person and a machine, however extraordinary she may be. It is precisely this honesty, more than the resolution itself, that struck readers and made Chobits one of the most talked-about works in CLAMP's catalog, far beyond its original seinen readership.
