The Shadow of the Past
Once the Hideki/Chi duo is established, CLAMP widens the frame and gives voice to the characters orbiting them, revealing that each of them has a different — and often painful — relationship with Persocoms. Minoru Kokubunji, a gifted classmate, has built his own Persocom, Yuzuki, with his own hands, and has grown so attached to her that he ends up avoiding all human contact: his story directly raises the question of emotional dependence on a machine programmed never to contradict its owner. In parallel, the romantic past of Hiromu Shinbo, Hideki's teacher, resurfaces through his troubled relationship with a woman who reminds him of a lost love, further blurring the line between human attachment and projection onto an artificial substitute. These mirrored stories let the series multiply perspectives on the same question — can one love a Persocom the way one loves a human being, and does that love carry the same worth? — without ever giving a single answer. It is also in this arc that the first serious clues about Chi's true nature begin to appear: unexplained reactions, fragments of memory resurfacing, and the growing certainty, for Hideki as much as for the reader, that Chi is no ordinary Persocom, but perhaps one of those legendary machines urban rumor calls "Chobits."
