16. Chi spends
Another variation on the theme of money and consumption, this episode sees Chi making purchases that, as is often the case in the series, say as much about her personal evolution as about Hideki's ever-precarious financial situation. The recurring budgetary motif in Chobits once again grounds the series in a concrete material reality, far from more abstract science-fiction narratives: owning a Persocom, however endearing she may be, comes with a very real cost, and this episode does not shy away from that pragmatic dimension of the duo's daily life. Beyond the comic side of these situations β Hideki forced to rework his already tight budget, Chi clumsily aware or unaware of how much weight her wants place on her companion's finances β the episode continues to explore the question of personal desire in Chi, this time through the very concrete lens of buying and owning. Can she want to possess something for herself, independent of its usefulness to Hideki? This question, treated lightly on the surface, extends the reflection begun in earlier episodes on the emergence of a will of her own in a Persocom initially devoid of any identifiable personal desire, patiently contributing to the construction of an ever more complex character.
