17. Chi helps
This episode puts Chi in an active helping role, coming to the aid of — or lending her support to — someone, Hideki or another character close to him, in a delicate situation. This motif of helping, central to the very definition of the role traditionally assigned to Persocoms in the world of the series, takes on a particular significance here: the help Chi provides seems motivated not by the mere execution of a programmed task, but by genuine empathetic initiative, further reinforcing the question of her emotional and moral autonomy. The episode also highlights the skills Chi has developed over the course of the series — her powers of observation, her memory for the habits of those around her, her sensitivity to others' needs — which, taken together, sketch the portrait of an ever more capable and assertive character, far removed from the passive, memoryless being of the very first episode. For Hideki, watching Chi take the initiative to help someone strengthens his growing conviction that she is far more than a mere sophisticated machine, without dispelling the broader mystery surrounding her origins. This episode thus fits logically into the character's ongoing progression, while offering its share of touching scenes that deepen the viewer's attachment to her.
