22. Chi changes clothes
Chi's change of clothes, a seemingly minor motif, takes on a strong symbolic dimension in this episode, as the series approaches its conclusion. Dressing differently can mean far more than a simple aesthetic choice: a fresh start, an inner transformation made visible on the outside, or yet another step in the assertion of Chi's own identity, distinct from the one she was given upon arriving at Hideki's. The series, no stranger to this kind of discreet symbolism since its first episode, uses Chi's physical appearance here as a reflection of her inner evolution, in keeping with her trajectory of learning and self-assertion begun much earlier in the series. For Hideki, this change is also another opportunity to measure how much Chi has grown and changed since they met, reinforcing the almost coming-of-age dimension of their relationship, in which each accompanies the other through their own transformation. This episode, just a few steps from the series' final resolution, contributes to the rising emotional tension that characterizes this final stretch, where every detail, however slight it may seem, carries added symbolic weight given how close the conclusion now is.
