23. Chi decides
The second-to-last episode of the series places Chi before a decision whose importance far exceeds the scope of the daily life explored so far. After twenty-two episodes devoted to her gradual learning of the world, of language, and of her own emotions, Chi must now make a choice that directly commits her future and that of her relationship with Hideki β a direct echo, in the animated adaptation, of the ending of CLAMP's original manga. This decision, whose precise content is revealed over the course of the episode, crystallizes the whole set of themes developed since the beginning of the series: the authenticity of feelings, the place of individual will in a Persocom, and the question of whether true love can exist between a human being and a machine capable of learning to feel. Hideki, for his part, must also come to terms with the consequences of this choice, in an emotional mirroring that underscores just how much the two characters have grown together since their first meeting. Madhouse's direction here favors restrained intensity over emphasis, letting the weight of everything left unsaid since the beginning of the series carry this pivotal scene to its full effect. A densely emotional episode that directly prepares the ground for the final resolution.
