3. Chi learns
This episode focuses on Chi's acquisition of language, a crucial step that shapes the entire course of her relationship with Hideki. Unable to communicate with anything but her own name at the start of the series, she progresses here before our eyes, word by word, in endearing scenes where Hideki improvises as teacher despite his complete lack of experience. The series strikes an excellent balance here between humor β Chi's vocabulary mistakes, her mistimed repetitions β and a kind of pedagogical tenderness that recalls how much language shapes our relationship to the world and to others. This learning process is not neutral, however: each new word Chi absorbs sometimes seems to trigger a disproportionate reaction in her, as though certain terms strike a nerve she does not understand herself, quietly planting a seed of unease amid the prevailing lightness. The episode also illustrates Hideki's growing patience, whose attachment to Chi keeps deepening as she becomes able to express herself and, by extension, reveal a personality of her own. This progression of language serves as a running metaphor for the whole series: learning to speak is also learning to exist in the eyes of others, and the path Chi walks in this episode is as much intellectual as it is emotional.
