4. Chi goes shopping
Off to the shops for this episode devoted to a shopping trip that turns, as so often in Chobits, into a small everyday adventure. Hideki, perennially broke, must contend with Chi's whims and discoveries amid the profusion of goods and clothes in Tokyo's stores, giving the series a chance for numerous visual gags about the gap between Chi's innocence and the social codes she has yet to master. This episode also allows for a deeper look at the very concrete question of the cost of maintaining a Persocom β clothes, accessories, possible repairs β which weighs on Hideki's already tight budget, grounding the series in a tangible economic reality rather than abstract science fiction. Interactions with shopkeepers and other customers also broaden the gallery of secondary characters populating the duo's daily life, while dropping a few more clues about how the society of Chobits perceives and treats Persocoms day to day β a mix of fascination, casual indifference, and, at times, a barely veiled contempt that contrasts with Hideki's sincere attachment. Beneath its light slice-of-life surface, the episode thus continues to feed the series' underlying reflection on the place of Persocoms in society.
