6. Chi weakens
A break in tone for this episode, which introduces a more concrete worry: Chi shows unexplained signs of weakness, brutally reminding Hideki — and the viewer — that despite all the affection she inspires, she remains a machine whose workings largely escape him. This sudden fragility clashes with the lightness of the previous episodes and lets the series confront head-on the anxiety of caring for a being whose nature and needs one does not fully understand. Hideki, helpless in a situation beyond his abilities as an ordinary student, must grapple with the fear of losing someone to whom he has grown attached without even fully realizing it. The episode also explores, implicitly, the question of technical dependence: unlike a sick human being, Chi cannot be treated by an ordinary doctor, and her fate hinges on technical knowledge Hideki does not possess, reinforcing the sense of helplessness that runs through the whole episode. This darker interlude, brief but striking, lays the groundwork for the revelations to come about Chi's true nature, while reminding us that beneath the series' apparent lightness lies a constant meditation on vulnerability, human or mechanical, and on what it really means to watch over someone.
