5. Chi discovers
This episode widens Chi's horizons beyond her strict daily life with Hideki, confronting her with new experiences that feed her insatiable curiosity about the world around her. Every discovery, however trivial it might seem to a human viewer, takes on an almost wondrous dimension here thanks to Madhouse's direction, which frames Chi's gaze with particular care, turning ordinary scenes into small moments of quiet poetry. The story also continues to lay down the landmarks of the series' world β the omnipresence of Persocoms in the contemporary Japanese society imagined by CLAMP, the habits of daily life that follow from it β without ever sacrificing the gentle comic rhythm that characterizes this first part of the series. Hideki, for his part, watches this discovery of the world with a mix of pride and a latent unease: each new thing Chi learns seems to bring her a little closer to a self-awareness that goes far beyond what he ever expected from a simple Persocom. This episode thus plays on a double level of reading, accessible on the surface as a simple, endearing chronicle of everyday life, while continuing beneath it to feed the series' central mystery about Chi's true nature and the still-blurry limits of what a Persocom is supposed to be able to feel or understand.
